Final Newsletter 2025

Our Final Newsletter

Dear Friends,

Sadly, the time has come to wind down production of the Sustainable Broomfield Newsletter as it has become, well … unsustainable.

This isn’t the end of the Sustainable Broomfield nonprofit, just the quarterly newsletter! Our website, SustainableBroomfield.com will still remain active and serves as a valuable resource for all of your sustainability queries. Also, if some important and actionable news comes up that we think you should know about, we may send another newsletter/message encouraging you to take action.

A little History…

Sustainable Broomfield started in 2019 with a small group of individuals who wanted to have access to curbside composting like the residents in Boulder County have. We were told by our friends at Eco-Cycle that the path to this objective was to first transition Broomfield to a single hauler waste collection system. So, with this goal in mind, we started on a 6 year journey that lead us places we never expected.

  • We grew our member numbers and started to hold regular meetings both in-person and eventually online.
  • We attended Broomfield government meetings where we learned more about local sustainability issues and voiced our opinions.
  • We invited a diverse mixture of individuals with a variety of messages to come and do presentations for our group.
  • We volunteered to transform a weed ridden area at the Brunner Farmhouse into a sustainable, pollinator friendly, perennial garden.
  • We held booths on Earth Day, at Broomfield Days, and other city events to teach people all about composting, recycling, and living more sustainably.
  • We developed a website, social media pages, and started this e-newsletter to help keep residents informed.
  • We developed an online Zero-Waste guide to help people dispose of used items through recycling, reuse, resale, and repair.
  • We ran a very successful Earth Day city-wide Scavenger Hunt fundraiser to help encourage sustainable lifestyles.
  • We partnered with the Broomfield Crescent Grange and started the very successful Sustainable Broomfield Compost Club, which in turn benefited the Grange’s community garden.
  • We increased awareness for sustainability issues in Broomfield and helped people advocate for change.

AND, we just reached our initial goal of transitioning Broomfield to a single hauler waste collection system! This was the groundwork that had to be laid before the acquisition of a curbside composting option could be added. We hope that residents will continue to ask their City Council Members to add this service to the regular waste collection options in the near future!

Don’t wait to compost!

The commercial composting landscape in Broomfield has changed drastically in the past 6 years! There are now at least 3 small businesses that anyone who wants commercial composting can sign up with – ScrapsCompost Colorado, and Wompost!

Take local climate action by volunteering with the Urban Forestry campaign!

Join Eco-Cycle, the PLAY Boulder Foundation, and the Cool Boulder Initiative in a Neighborhood Urban Forest Campaign this spring!

Communities must prepare for climatic extremes. The shade and evaporative cooling provided by trees and other plants will be an increasingly critical part of keeping communities safe and livable for humans and our ecological communities (like pollinators).

That’s why the City of Boulder, in collaboration with local partners like Eco-Cycle, has initiated Cool Boulder, a nature-based climate solutions campaign uniting community members to forge a resilient climate future. Last fall, we planted over 85 native trees and shrubs in our community, and we’re expanding our efforts!

This spring, we are continuing to build a Neighborhood Urban Forest together, and we need your help! Click this link to find out how YOU can be part of the solution as a volunteer!

Drive your EV in the Broomfield Days Parade!

Hello, my name is Caroline and I’ve been driving an EV for almost 6 years now! I’m part of an enthusiastic team of EV owners and drivers that love to talk and share experiences about their cars.

I would love to get a team of EV enthusiasts together to be a part of the Broomfield Days Parade this September! I have been in one parade with gas cars before, it didn’t smell that great!! Haha! Wouldn’t it be great for the next generation to see what awesome EV cars are on the road today! Maybe they will ask their parents to buy one!

I volunteer with Drive Electric Colorado, Denver Electric Vehicle Council and Electric Vehicle Association! It would be a grand time for us to get the EVs out there in the parade and then share them afterward with a car show!

If anyone has an EV and is interested, please contact me. I’d love for you to be part of this amazing opportunity and community!
